The legacy of “Jurassic Park” has brought about a three-ten years long franchise that a short while ago strike rock-bottom with this summer’s “Jurassic World: Dominion,” although not even that is enough to diminish its greatness, or distract from its nightmare-inducing power. For a wailing kindergartener like myself, the film was so realistic that it poised the tear-filled problem: What if that T-Rex came to life as well as a real feeding frenzy ensued?

“Jackie Brown” may be considerably less bloody and slightly less quotable than Tarantino’s other 1990s output, nonetheless it makes up for that by nailing all the little things that he does so well. The clever casting, flawless soundtrack, and wall-to-wall intertextuality showed that the same male who delivered “Reservoir Puppies” and “Pulp Fiction” was still lurking behind the camera.

Beneath the glassy surfaces of nearly every Todd Haynes’ movie lives a woman pressing against them, about to break out. Julianne Moore has played two of those: a suburban housewife chained on the social order of racially segregated 1950s Connecticut in “Far from Heaven,” and as another psychically shackled housewife, this time in 1980s Southern California, in “Safe.” 

Back in 1992, however, Herzog experienced less cozy associations. His sparsely narrated fifty-moment documentary “Lessons Of Darkness” was defined by a steely detachment to its subject matter, far removed from the warm indifference that would characterize his later non-fiction work. The film cast its lens over the destroyed oil fields of post-Gulf War Kuwait, a stretch of desert hellish enough even before Herzog brought his grim cynicism to the catastrophe. Even when his subjects — several of whom have been literally struck dumb by trauma — evoke God, Herzog cuts to such wide nightmare landscapes that it makes their prayers appear like they are being answered because of the Devil instead.

Gauzy pastel hues, flowery designs and lots of gossamer blond hair — these are some of the images that linger after you arise from the trance cast by “The Virgin Suicides,” Sofia Coppola’s snapshot of 5 sisters in parochial suburbia.

It’s easy to make high school and its inhabitants feel silly or transitory, but Heckerling is keenly conscious of the formative power of those teenage years. “Clueless” understands that while some of its characters’ concerns are small potatoes (Certainly, some people did get rid of all their athletic products during the Pismo Beach disaster, and no, a biffed driver’s test isn't the stop from the world), these experiences are also going to contribute to just how they technique life forever.  

And however, since the number of survivors continues to dwindle along with the Holocaust fades ever further more into the rear-view (making it that much much easier for online cranks and elected officers alike to fulfill Göth’s dream of turning generations of Jewish history into the stuff of rumor), it's got grown less difficult to understand the upside of Hoberman’s prediction.

The mystery of Carol’s health issues might be best understood as Haynes’ response for the AIDS crisis in America, as the movie is about in 1987, a time of the epidemic’s peak. But “Safe” is more than a chilling allegory; Haynes interviewed several different women with environmental sicknesses while researching his film, and also the finished merchandise vividly indicates that he didn’t get there at any pat options to their problems (or even for their causes).

“The Truman Show” is the rare high concept movie that executes its eye-catching premise to complete perfection. The thought of a person who wakes as much as learn that his entire life was a simulated reality show could have easily gone awry, but director Peter Weir and screenwriter Andrew Niccol managed to craft a plausible dystopian satire that has as much to say about our relationships with God as it does our relationships with the Kardashians. 

From that rich premise, “Walking and Talking” churns into a characteristically small-crucial but razor-sharp drama about the complexity of women’s inner lives, as the writer-director brings such deep oceans of feminine specificity to her dueling heroines (and their palpable display screen chemistry) that her attention xhamstercom can’t help alyx star but cascade down onto her male characters as well.
